Top 10 Horror Anime List

Our Top 10 Horror Anime List : Halloween Edition

Here’s just some of the scariest horror filled supernatural anime that we thought would be perfect to watch on a night such as today’s. Happy Halloween!

PS. The anime is in no particular order.

1 - Ghost Hunt
Studio: J.C.Staff.  |  Released: 2006  |  Duration: 25 episodes

What do you get when you combine a ghost hunter, a Shinto priestess, a Buddhist monk, a Psychic medium, a Catholic exorcist, and a high school girl who just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time? The answer is Ghost Hunt. The story follows Mai Taniyama, a high school student, and her involvement with the ghost hunting company Shibuya Psychic Research. After accidentally breaking some of their equipment and injuring one of their employees, the company’s manager Kazuya Shibuya orders Mai to become his assistant as compensation. As the series progresses and the characters go on more supernatural jobs, Mai and the audience will learn all about the paranormal.  Warning! Don’t underestimate this series just because it’s animated; we dare you to watch this alone in the dark and not get chills.

2 - Blood: The Last Vampire
Studio: Production I.G.  |  Released: 2000  |  Duration: 48 min

As you could probably guess from the title this animated feature film is about vampires, and not your typical Twilight vamps, we’re talking grotesque rip-you-to-shreds creatures. The story takes place mainly in Japan, at the American Yokota Air Base, in 1966; and follows our heroine Saya, a mysterious girl who seems to be working for the U.S. government to track down and kill Chiroptera, bat-like creatures who feed on human blood. Now like we’ve mentioned previously when it comes to studio Production I.G. you’re in for a visual treat, and Blood: The Last Vampire is no exception. I mean who doesn’t want to see a badass female protagonist slaying vampires with a katana sword. Also did we mention this story takes place during a Halloween school dance; perfect timing if you ask us!

3 - Parasyte - the maxim
Studio: Madhouse  |  Released: 2014  |  Duration: 24 episodes

If you’re a fan of movies like “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and “Alien”  then this Sci-Fi horror anime is just for you. It’s starts one night when a bunch of unidentifiable spores land on Earth, and from them emerges alien like worms that display parasitic qualities. The parasites’ goal is to invade the human brain and use it as a host. This is to insure the survival of their species, and to simultaneously take out the human race which they deem as toxic to the planet. That night in Tokyo a parasite tries to enter the body of an unsuspecting high school boy named Shinichi, but fails  due to the fact that the boy fell asleep with his earphones in. Pressed for time the parasite makes the split decision to burrow into his hand knowing this will at least keep him alive despite not fusing with the brain. Shinichi wakes up the next morning to discover that his right hand has developed a consciousness separate from his own. Shinichi now faces a constant battle to retain his humanity while coexisting with the parasite he’s named Migi.

4 - Mononoke
Studio: Toei Animation  |  Released: 2007  |  Duration: 12 episodes

At first we’ll admit we weren’t sure about this anime; despite it having some positive reviews the art and style was just a little too much to handle, but we told ourselves we’d watch at least 3 episodes and then make a decision, and man are we happy we stuck around. After your mind adjusts to the overstimulation of colours and patterns, you are able to enjoy some really intriguing and complex stories about Japanese folklores and superstitions. The series which takes place during the Edo period, follows a Medicine Seller as he goes around japan and exorcises mononoke (aka spirits). Before he is able to exorcise the spirits he must first discover their Form, Truth, and Reason. If you like murder mysteries and the occult, be sure to give this one a go.

However, the key separation isn’t related to their looks, but their diet, Ghouls survive by eating human flesh. Our main character, Ken Kaneki, learns this the hard way when his crush, Rize Kamishiro, attacks him while out on their date. He’s miraculously saved when construction beams land on Rize killing her, but not before leaving Kaneki in critical condition. 6 - Hell Girl
Studio: Studio Deen  |  Released: 2005  |  Duration: 90 episodes/ 4 seasons

Ever had someone give you a particularly hard time? Maybe a bully who just wouldn’t stop. What if you could make it all go away? Or give them their just deserts with one pull of a string. Would you… no never mind, just kidding don’t answer that 😅, but that's what the premise of this anime is all about. The one to contact about said problems is Ai Enma, known as Hell Girl. Over time the methods to contact Hell Girl have changed or we guess you can say upgraded, now she operates using a website that can be accessed through any online device at exactly midnight. If a human harbours enough hatred for someone in their heart they will be able to make a contract with Hell Girl who will ferry the souls of their antagonist to hell. In return for this service when the client dies their soul is also taken to hell to be tormented for eternity. Sounds like a good deal to us…

7 - Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Studio: Madhouse  |  Released: 2000  |  Duration: 1h 43min

This oldie but goodie is a must see for anyone who is into classic monster-vampire movies. The story starts when a vampire hunter simply known as D is hired to save the daughter of a man named Elbourne, after she’s kidnapped by Baron Meier Link, a vampire from the area who previously had never giving the townspeople any trouble. Not trusting D to get back his sister Charlotte, her brother hires a group of monster hunters  called the Marcus Brothers. And so the race to see who will save the girl and collect the reward money commences. Unbeknownst to them the Baron has hired his own group of mercenaries for protection, and not just any ordinary group, but the mutant Barbarois. The mutant Barbarous is a team made up of a shape-shifter, a shadow manipulator, and a werewolf. Along the way D learns that Charlotte was never abducted to begin with, but left with the Baron of her own free will, and that they plan to go to the City of The Night where no one will challenge their love. Being a dhampir, a half human and half vampire, this complicates things for D since his own human mother fell in love with a vampire, saying that love is possible between the two. Will he let the lovers go or will he finish the job he started? Find out!

8 - Witch Hunter Robin
Studio: Sunrise  |  Released: 2002  |  Duration: 26 episodes

To protect the public from harmful witches, a secret organization known as “SOLOMON” operates in the shadows to capture and eliminate any witches who’s powers have “awakened” which makes them act violently and homicidal. Solomon is also there to make sure that the general public does not find out about witchcraft. Since witchcraft is genetic, witches and people who might carry the witchcraft gene are all put into a database, which those working at Solomon monitor. Those who are sent out to neutralize the witches who become dangerous are specially trained hunters and craft-users. Our main protagonist Robin Sena, a fifteen year old Japanese girl brought up by the Roman Catholic Church in Italy, is a craft-user. We first meet Robin when she is sent to work at the Solomon branch in Japan. She’s also been tasked by those from Solomon’s headquarters to search for a mythical artifact said to hold the secrets of the craft. She soon discovers that not all is as it seems, and that everything she was taught to believe may just be a cover for something much more sinister.

9 - High School of the Dead
Studio: Madhouse  |  Released: 2010  |  Duration: 12 episodes

With all the vampires, demons, and ghosts we thought we should throw in a good zombie anime, and if you can ignore the overabundant (no pun intended) fanservice this is a great one to check out. It starts off as a normal school day for Takashi Komuro, but then while skipping class he witnesses a disturbance by the school gates. When some of the teachers go to investigate one of them gets bitten by some crazy guy trying to get in the school. The teacher drops to the floor only to rise again within minutes and attack the other teachers. Takashi realizing this is an urgent situation runs back to class to urge two of his friends that they all need to leave. Within moments the whole school is thrown into chaos as more teachers and students start getting turned into zombies. They soon find out that this is worldwide pandemic, with most of the world’s population having become victims. Its up to a small group of students and a school nurse to get out of the city alive, and look for any survivors along the way.

10 - Ghost Hound
Studio: Production I.G.  |  Released: 2007  |  Duration: 22 episodes

The story follows three boys, Taro, Makoto and Masayuki, who are bound together through traumatic childhood experiences. One was kidnapped as a youth and ransomed, which led to the death of his older sister, one found the body of their father after he committed suicide, and one was named as a bully who led to the suicide of a classmate. Each event is shrouded in mystery, leaving the boys in a purgatory limbo of suffering. Since everything is being kept in the dark they decide to team up and find out the truth for themselves. While on their quest for answers they accidentally enter the Unseen World. After that they continue to see spirits and strange visions that don’t exist in reality, they even have out of body experiences. With the help of the Shinto priest’s daughter Miyako and each other, they might just find out that the key to solving all these mysteries lies within the spirit realm.
