Tokyo Godfathers - An Anime Review
Hi Everyone!
The Holiday Season is upon us, and with that, we wanted to share one of our favourite Christmas movies with you all. We’re talking about Satoshi Kon’s film Tokyo Godfathers. And if you’re familiar with his work you know you’re not likely to be disappointed. This film has so much charm and character and boasts one of the best set of protagonists that we can’t sing its praises enough. We just love it! And if you give it a shot, we’re sure you’ll love it too.
If you'd like to watch our full anime review of the film, feel free to check out the video below:
The story follows three homeless people who have banded together to form their own little family unit. We have Gin, the snarky and cynical alcoholic, Miyuki, the sassy and sometimes insolent teenage runaway, and Hana, the overly dramatic yet kind-hearted former drag-performer and a transgender woman. On the night of Christmas Eve, while searching through some garbage piles looking for potential Christmas gifts, they instead unexpectantly come across an abandoned baby. Not wanting to bring the baby to the police, nor being able to keep it, they decide to search for the baby’s parents instead. The rest of the story follows them on their wild and somewhat dubious quest through the vast city of Tokyo, where they come across various different people and get into all sorts of trouble.
We do have to quickly note that this film is for a more mature audience, as it deals with some serious social issues and themes, but Satoshi tackles them all in a very comedic manner, largely in thanks to his amusingly lovable trio of outsiders.
This movie is such a great example of master storytelling that we believe this is also a great film to ease anyone who isn’t sure about liking anime into the fold. So this holiday, give yourself or someone you love the gift of Tokyo Godfathers! :)
That’s it for now. We wish everyone a Happy Holiday!
Stay safe out there, and
~ Stay Obsessed
