Our Top 10 Favourite Anime Series of 2020

Our Top 10 Favourite Anime Series of 2020

Hi Everyone, and Happy New Year!

Let’s be honest, as a whole 2020 was not the best of years… but luckily it did still give us some pretty good anime to keep us entertained. To make going through all that anime easier for you all, we’ve compiled a list of ten anime series we enjoyed the most during 2020. And just like our list from 2019, you’ll notice that we won’t be covering any anime sequels or movies again, instead, we’ll only be focusing on anime series that made their debuts in 2020.

So here’s looking back on our top ten favourite anime series that made staying in lockdown during 2020 somewhat more bearable.

Let’s get right to it ~

Studio: NUT  |  Released: 2020  |  Duration: 12 episodes  |  Stream: Funimation

10 - Deca-Dence

Starting off the list at #10 is Deca-Dence. In the future, humans have been driven to the brink of extinction through a combination of increasing levels of pollution and a horde of hostile alien lifeforms known as Gadoll. In a world that favours the physically strong we follow the tale of a young girl named Natsume, who lost both her family and arm in a Gadoll attack as a child. Even though the world sees her as being at a disadvantage she continues to charge forward full speed ahead with the hope that she can somehow make a difference, and possibly even end the war once and for all.

Studio: Doga Kobo  |  Released: 2020  |  Duration: 12 episodes  |  Stream: Crunchyroll

09 - Sing “Yesterday” For Me

Drifting into our #9 spot is the beautifully animated coming-of-age anime “Sing Yesterday For Me”. We follow our main protagonist Rikuo Uozumi, a fresh University graduate, currently working part-time at a convenience store, as he struggles with finding his place in the world. He’s figured out a desk job isn’t for him, but he isn’t quite sure where to go from there and worries his non-conformist ways will make others look down on him. The decision between doing what’s expected of you versus doing what will ultimately make you happy. This is a constant struggle that most of the characters in the anime face. Luckily for Uozumi he has some pretty good friends who encourage him to keep moving forward.

Studio: Wit  |  Released: 2020  |  Duration: 14 episodes  |  Stream: Netflix

 08- Great Pretender

A bunch of Con-artists and swindlers steal the #8 spot with the gem of a series Great Pretender.  Great Pretender is a great comedic crime series that harks back to classic animes such as Lupin the Third and Cowboy Bebop, which should be enough to have anyone running to their nearest screen. The story follows Makoto Edamura, the newest recruit of an international team of con-artists led by a Frenchman named Laurent. This diverse team of criminals will be sure to amaze you with their complex and creative cons, which will have you wondering what’s true and what’s false right until the end, and if given a chance they may even end up stealing your heart as well.

Studio: MAPPA  |  Released: 2020  |  Duration: 13 episodes  |  Stream: Crunchyroll

07 - The God of High School

Battling its way to the #7 spot is The God of High School, a good old fashion shounen anime, that is based on the popular Korean webcomic by Younje Park. The story follows Jin Mori a Taekwondo practitioner, Yoo Mira the heir to the Moonlight Sword techniques, and Han Daewi a Karate expert, as they compete in a martial arts tournament, where the grand prize is having any wish they desire fulfilled. Sounds a bit too good to be true. The God of High School not only boasts some incredibly well-animated fight scenes but is also ridiculously funny. Making The God of High School one of the most entertaining shows of 2020.

Studio: Lerche  |  Released: 2020  |  Duration: 12 episodes  |  Stream: Funimation

 06 - Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun

Appearing in the #6 spot is Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun, a cute anime with a deceptively sinister edge. The story follows our main protagonist Yashiro Nene, as she seeks the help of a spiritual being called Hanako-kun. Hanako-Kun is said to be one of the seven most powerful urban legends residing at her school, and if you’re able to summon him from the third-floor girls' bathroom, you can ask him to grant you a wish in exchange for something else. Now, what could possibly make Yashiro so desperate to make this deal? Well, Yashiro happens to be extremely unlucky in love and feels like she needs some extra help to make her senpai fall in love with her. What could possibly go wrong?

Studio: Sunrise  |  Released: 2020  |  Duration: 12 episodes  |  Stream: Funimation

05 - Wave, Listen To Me!

Hitting the charts at #5 is Wave, Listen to Me! This anime follows the hilariously over-dramatic Minare Koda, a bold and outspoken curry restaurant worker who was just dumped by her boyfriend. A boyfriend who it turns out also happened to take most of her life savings before exited her life. Most people would be too distraught to move on, but Minare is one tough cookie and she claims that she can get over almost anything in exactly 5 days. Part of this 5-day purge routine involves one night of heavy drinking and airing out her grievances to whoever happens to be nearby, in this case, a man named Matou-san. The next day she’s refreshed and ready to move on, only to shockingly hear herself over the radio ranting about her no-good ex. Rushing to stop the broadcast, she runs into Matou-san again, the Chief Director of the radio station, and most shocking of all he has a job for her.

Studio: MAPPA  |  Released: 2020  |  Duration: 24 episodes  |  Stream: Crunchyroll

04 - Jujutsu Kaisen

Effortlessly sliding into the #4 spot is Jujustu Kaisen, an anime that was heavily inspired by shounen anime series such as Hunter x Hunter, Naruto, Bleach, and One Punch Man. Here we meet Itadori Yuuji, to say he’s not your typical high school student is no exaggeration, especially since he could easily become the ace of the Track & Field club. Itadori just wanting to take things easy though, surprises everyone by joining the Occult Research club instead, but things soon get serious when his fellow club members open the seal on a genuine cursed item, unleashing a mass number of evil spirits. Suddenly Itadori is hurled into a world where curses are very real, and seriously terrifying. Despite that, he’s willing to do whatever it takes to protect those around him, even if that means making a pact with a powerful demon called Sukuna, who’s only wish is to wreak havoc on the world.

02 - Tower of God

Climbing to the #2 spot is Tower of God, an anime adaptation of the popular Korean WEBTOON comic of the same name. In this story, we follow Yoru, a young boy whose only wish is to be reunited with his friend Rachel. To do this he has to enter the Tower, a mysterious building made up of multiple floors that has the power to make your wishes come true. In order for your wish to be granted, you must ascend to the top of the tower, but this task isn’t as easy as just climbing a bunch of stairs - each floor has a test that must be cleared before ascending to the next floor, and if that wasn’t hard enough you will also be running into a bunch of rivals who covet the same goal and are willing to do whatever it takes to get there first. Sounds easy enough right?
