2017 Otakuthon Experience

Some people might be reading this and thinking “Otakuthon happened in August, why are you guys only writing about it in September?” Like we mentioned in a previous post we’ve been dealing with some health issues and so we are a little behind, but we still wanted to share our 2017 Otakuthon experience, so we hope you guys will forgive our tardiness.

Otakuthon which takes place in Montreal, is a convention for those interested in Japanese Pop-Culture. So basically for those who like anime, manga, cosplay, video games, etc, this is the convention for you. There are always tons of great artists and cosplayers who turn up. You can go on Otakuthon’s official website to see all their updates and stay posted about who is on their guest list, which events and panels they’re hosting, and just overall news. You can get great deals if you pre-register and buy your tickets online during the first early bird round. We talk more about Otakuthon and buying tickets in this post. If you get your passes this way, you need to make sure you give yourself time on the Thursday before the three-day Con to go to “Badge Pick-up”. This can be a long wait so we suggest you show up at least 1-2 hours before. We also recommend bringing something to sit on, and to have some water and snacks ready. Previous years the line ups took place in a large room on the second floor of the Palais-des-Congrés, but this year the lines were instead on the first floor by the “Pink Trees”. Personally we found it was a lot more congested and confusing this way and many of the lines ended up getting mixed up with each other. Lots of people who had already pre-bought their tickets ended up in the purchase lines… which let us tell you they were not happy about. This was the first year they tried it this way so hopefully if they do it like this again next year most of the kinks get ironed out.

Now on to fun stuff now!

Cosplays!! Here are some photos of people who we thought had some awesome cosplays! Some times there are so many people taking photos of the cosplayers it’s hard to approach them, so if anyone was luckier than us and knows who they are, please let us know in the comments so we can credit them. We were able to get the names of the girls in the second photo, Kumiho and Sylnaecos , we’ve linked their instagrams if you guys want to see more of their stuff. We had some cosplays of our own planned for this year,  but unfortunately due to time constraints we weren’t able to finish in time, but we’ll try to have them done by next year so we can show you guys 😊

One thing we wanted to check out this year for sure that we had never done in previous years was the Cosplay Café. It was fun to finally get to try all these Japanese festival street foods such as Curry Korokke, Takoyaki and Taiyaki. Which we really enjoyed, yum… except the Takoyaki… but not being fans of seafood we probably should have just skipped that from the get go. At least now we can say we’ve tried it, just never again lol. They also had Sushi, Onigiri, Curry, Purrin, Bubble Tea, and multiple Pocky flavours among other things.

Here’s some of the booty we pick up at Otakuthon 2017! After much despair last year we FINALLY found our Totoro plushie! It’s not just a plushie, but it also comes with a blanky and arm cozy so it’s the perfect travel companion. Totoro will definitely be on every flight and future adventure we go on! Another thing we were hoping to come across this year were some Sailor Moon mystery boxes, but no matter how much we looked we just couldn’t find any. Actually overall we were pretty surprised at how few mystery boxes we found, especially since last year most booths had an overwhelming amount of them. This time the thing we saw the most of were those Pop! boxes, so we were a little disappointed in that. Also we hardly found any Cardcaptors merch? Maybe we’re behind on a trend or something? Like perhaps the Magical Girl trend is at an end? Let us know. We hope not, here’s hoping we see some next year! We did end up by buying some Tokidoki boxes which we were happy about 😄 We love our Tokidoki. If you’re curious about which ones we got you can check it out on our Instagram. We then got some cute hair accessories from Super Kawaii Super Store, which we loved so much we wore them right away the next day.

After the Merch section it was on to the Artists section. We love to pick up cards as we go along so that when we get back home we can take our time and go check people out on their social medias like DeviantArt, Instagram, Facebook & Websites. Gotta collect ‘em all! There’s so many wonderful and talented people.  One artist we really liked this year was Avery Kua, she had some really incredible and cool art. Luckily we were able to pick up an amazing Princess Mononoke print from her. We definitely recommend you checking out her site and shop.  Other things we like to look for during Otakuthon are patches and pins, and this year we picked up one with a cute bunny sporting an eyepatch from Shiroi Room. It has a pink crescent moon on its forehead, which helped soften the blow for the absent Sailor Moon merch lol It’s really fun to see everyone so passionate about the convention, and it’s a great opportunity to chat with artists and vendors and fellow convention goers.

We can’t wait for next year!!! For first timers look out for all of these things and for repeat offenders haha we hope to see you all again next year!

Stay Obsessed ~
