Witches Beware! Because Witch Hunter Robin is Here

Anime Review - Witch Hunter Robin

Hey Everyone! If you follow our blog then you may have seen our “Top 10 Horror Anime List” post from way back in 2017 and will probably be familiar with the anime Witch Hunter Robin. But with Halloween right around the corner, we thought we’d revisit this occult hit again. Like always you can check out our full anime review over on our Lazy Lion Youtube Channel where we cover the anime more in-depth, but here’s some bonus info we don’t mention in the video.

A brief summary:

Witch Hunter Robin is a 26 episode anime that was released by studio Sunrise in 2002. So another oldie but a goodie. It follows the story of Robin Sena, a fifteen-year-old girl, who has been sent by the witch-hunting organization SOLOMON, to work over at their branch in Japan, known as STN-J, after they lost one of their hunters.

Quick side note -

Hunters are people with the witch gene, but whose powers haven’t awoken yet and are known as Seeds for their potential to turn into witches. What’s so bad about turning into a witch? Turns out these witches are a bit different than the witches most audiences are familiar with - these witches are more like fallen gods who have become corrupted by their immense powers and lash out at anyone who has the misfortunate to cross paths with them.

Now back to Robin - Robin is no ordinary hunter, she’s what’s known as a craft-user, someone who has the ability to manipulate an element. In her case, she can use pyrokinesis an ability that allows her to fight fire with fire so to speak.

The rest of the hunters at STN-J view her with suspicions at first, especially since she’s been sent directly from SOLOMON’s main office in Italy. Many thinking she’s likely a spy; and they’re not completely wrong. Robin has been sent to the STN-J with a secret mission, not only is she to look for a mysterious artifact that holds the secrets of the craft known as the Fragment of Wisdom, but she’s also there to discover more about this new weapon/tool the STN-J is using to fight against witches called Orbos.

The hypocrisy of hunting witches with the help of hunters who have the potential to awaken and thus turning into witches themselves hasn’t escaped everyone’s notice at the STN-J Office. This is why the STN-J and the “Factory”, the unit that then takes the witches into custody, created Orbos.

Orbos is a green like liquid that Hunters wear in vials around their necks. This liquid negates the witchcraft abilities of both the witch and the hunters, which allows the hunters to fight witches without losing control and awakening their own powers. All things come at a price though, and over time the hunters' own powers will start deteriorating and leaves them weakened. Robin when first arriving at the STN-J, refuses to use Orbos, saying that it’s disgusting.

Anyone else getting Jinroh vibes?

Of course, the STN-J’s final goal is to be able to rely solely on humans, who have no ties to the witchcraft genes. Which would mean that the hunters would now also become the hunted. A Most Dangerous Game indeed. Dum dum dum!

Witch Hunter Robin is a great anime that introduces witches in a new and refreshing way, and as the show continues it gets harder and harder to choose just what side you’re supposed to be rooting for. It’s also got an incredible soundtrack and is a visual Gothic aesthetic delight - So why not treat yourself by watching Witch Hunter Robin this Halloween? We promise this is no trick.
